This story approaches the Ton from the top down. We have a Duke who is wracked with guilt and feels unworthy of love. Then we have Kathryn Darrell who has been tucked away in the country by an unsavory husband who had thankfully died in a duel.
They come together when Kathryn sought to learn the reason for her late husband's frequent absences from home - the places he spent his time looking for pleasure away from her. She wanted to enjoy a passionate freedom for the first time in her life. She is bold, intelligent, sassy and looking for adventure, which makes her an amusing heroine. Ryder Blake, the eleventh Duke of Darkwell, has been asked by Kathryn to teach her in pleasure. He was intrigued but initially refuses her. The ensuing journey is filled with humor, heart tugs and hope. Ryder's dedication to his dead wife is admirable and I can only imagine how hard it would be to let go, this emotion and struggle is portrayed beautifully. The care and compassion shown through Kathryn is touching. The fact that Ryder understands and acknowledges Kathryn’s need for independence made me love him more. I loved these characters and was cheering at the end. This is a wonderful, fun, and well written story. I am looking forward to more form Ms. Devon.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
