Millicent Danforth is Sebastian’s elderly aunt’s paid companion and he makes it his business to assess her role in their lives; she will do but, she throws him off kilter. She is frank, smart, insightful- almost too much so, pragmatic and not intimidated by Sebastian at all. Milly sees past the “traitor” straight to his heart.

Sebastian is being targeted by the English officers he “met” during the war and challenged to duel after duel. However he denies them the one thing they want- to redeem themselves in their own eyes and hearts. He has resigned himself to a short and lonely life. Milly gets under his skin and makes him start to wish for a future. The tenderness Sebastian was able to bring to those he cares for, despite his past is heartwarming. 

Throughout the story you know who the enemy is, but not the depth of the betrayal and the hope rolled up in Sebastian’s life. The struggle to grasp a life he thought was over is poignant and the injustice make you want to stand by him and fight with him.  Ms. Burrowes has created that fine balance between good and evil with skill and grace. The ending had me reaching for the tissue and cheering! I enjoyed it immensely and I recommend this series to all. Well done, Ms. Burrowes, and thank you!

A Woman Made for Sin, the second book in the Promises Trilogy by Michele Sinclair, is a fast paced, sexystory of three best friends who would do anything for each other, especially when it comes to love.Lady Aimee Wentworth has been in love with Reece Hamilton since childhood, but the handsome sea captain is reluctant to commit to her because she has a title and he doesn’t.  The three friends concoct a plan to get Aimee and Reece together, but their plan has unexpected consequences for everyone when things go awry and Aimee is captured by sailors who think she is a thief.  She is dragged aboard Reece’s ship and imprisoned in a hold just as it sets sail.

While the story starts out slowly, it quickly evolves into a delightful tale of intrigue and passion, with enough twists and turns to keep a reader guessing until the satisfying conclusion.  It’s easy to cheer for Aimee and her friends, Millie and Janelle, as they find themselves in a variety of perilous situations,but the behavior of Reece and Millie’s husband Chase (Aimee’s brother) can be sometimes frustrating.  There are also many likeable support characters that give the book some of its charm.

I highly recommend this book and give it four stars.  It would have been five if not for a seemingly irrelevant subplot concerning maps (did I miss something?), and the sudden, sometimes confusing, jumps between subplots.  

A Woman Made for Sin will be released on 8/5/2014.  A great book to take on vacation!

They first met at a The Merry Maidenhead. Kathleen Janette Kendricks, (Katie) the daughter of a gambling Baron Kendricks,  and  Lesley Byrne, Lord Linden,  a rake of rakes.   The gin shop was owned by Zack, Katie’s half-brother, who was watching over Katie while her father was missing. Katie was dressed as a young man, serving drinks and making friends with the other bar-girl, Winnie, who is involved in the revolution. 

When Lord Linden saved Katie from a drunk, Nasty Ned, twice, he finally recognized her as the young lady she was.  In order to protect her, Zack takes her to Lord Linden’s house, sure he will make her his mistress. (Evidently, the Baron had made Zack promise to make her someone’s mistress if he did not return, as this would provide for her)  Becoming his mistress would provide the protection she needed from Nasty Ned. Kate is totally unaware of the plan, she thinks Zack is taking her to a friends house for her protection.  Katie denies Lesley, Lord Linden, of making love.  In his drunken state, he leaves her room and tells her to lock the door.  

The next day, not knowing what to do with her, he goes to the runners and finds out no one knows where the Baron is.  That evening he has to leave to go to his Grandmere’s ball.  Katie is to stay in his home and he will spend the night elsewhere.  When he is gone, someone tries to break into his house, calling out for Katie.  Scared, she runs to Lesley’s Grandmere’s house, in her nightgown.  The scandal

begins.  

Not knowing what to do, Lesley brings Katie to Laurel Steele’s house, his on and off lover.  Laurel wanted nothing to do with Katie, specially after learning who was her father.  After much persuasion, Laurel agress.  This frees Lesley to look for the Baron, but has no luck.

What a wonderful, fun and fast paced story.

Her Serene Highness, Princess Dagmar Marie Sophie, has been ordered by her cousin, the Crown Prince of Copenhagen, to leave her home. She is not sure where she will be going and is without any family in Copenhagen and has very limited funds, well none to speak of. She is feisty, smart, determined and fun.

When we meet Leopold (Leo) Ernst George Mortimer, seventh Earl of March, is in service to the crown of England and he is helping a stranded cat from a tree. Instantly we are rewarded with the quirky humor that is carried throughout the story. He is left for dead by soldiers and manages to find Dagmar’s back garden. Dagmar needs recuing and sees Leo as a way to conform to her nasty cousin’s wishes to leave her home and getting herself to England and her English relatives that turned their backs on her mother for marry her father. They marry and she nurses him back to health on the trip to England. 

When Leo finally comes to his senses from his fever he finds himself married to Dagmar, which, while not what he was planning, is turning out to be the best thing for him. He finds that she had used creative sneakiness to accomplish the marriage and getting them on the English ship. They are married, but know virtually nothing about each other and during their “courtship” they discover things about themselves and they come to realize they are better together than apart. We are treated to hilarious discussions of lady and man parts and their relationship to the other and wonderfully charming advice from Dagmar’s mother on the same. There is a murderess loose and in typical period fashion the men leave the women out of the mix, only the woman have other ideas. The women that have befriended Dagmar have a whiskey induced brain storming session to figure out how to help. 

Ms. MacAlister uses humor and fast paced conversations to bring out the depth of the characters she has created. They are feisty, irreverent and fun. Ms. MacAlister’s ability to be charming while bringing tension and mystery to us, the readers is brilliant. There were a couple of things along the read that I felt were not explained, but in the end they were far outweighed by the enjoyment the story brought. I love the way I came to care so quickly for the characters and was thrilled to see their story unfold.

Lady Windermere’s Loveris the third book in the Wild Quartet series by Miranda Neville. The hero and heroine, Lord and Lady Windermere (Damian and Cynthia), were strangers who suddenly found themselves married as partial settlement of a gambling debt.  Damien, who has little interest in being married to someone that he sees as plain and simple, immediately abandons his wife and goes into the foreign service.  When he returns a year later, he finds that Cynthia has become very pretty and more at ease with her position in society.  He begins to feel that perhaps they could have a future together, but he is plagued by rumors that she had taken a lover in his absence.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed her writing style.  The story line held my interest and the pacing was even. The heroine, especially, was very likeable and the hero’s reactions to various situations were very believable.  In one chapter, both Cynthia and Damian draw portraits of each other which gives them new insight into their relationship.  I felt this scenario was particularly well written and I hoped that the author would follow this up later in the book.  She did.  What she didn’t do, however, was follow-up on another issue that haunted the couple, especially Cynthia, throughout the book, and this was disappointing.

I’m giving Lady Windermere’s Lover four stars because I felt the ending was far too abrupt.  It cried out for an epilogue to wind everything up, especially the issue I mentioned above, but instead I felt like the readers were left hanging.  Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and I’m adding other books by Miranda Neville to my TBR list.

Alistair Devlin, Marquess of Coventry, is a brilliant, if peculiar man who does not suffer fools. He feels he is above the base needs and emotions the rest of humanity falls prey to. He works for the Crown as a spy and code breaker. Under the hard crust he shows the world is a caring, loyal and vulnerable man.

They met when he rescued Winifred (Wilmington) and her maid during a terrible snow storm. They had a brief affair while the snow was blowing. Fast forward six years and he is looking for a map maker, Winifred’s dead husband, Sir Mirren. Winifred is a strong, loving and very practical woman. Alistair needs several maps to break a code and is surprised to see Winifred again.  Throughout their story Alistair discovers he does have those pesky feelings and emotions and they are for her. He has never had much contact with children but finds he is drawn to Winifred’s son Oliver. There is murder, danger, misunderstandings, and ultimately tender acceptance and love. 

It was interesting seeing Alistair discover his emotions and his need to have Winifred near him, she clams him and does not always feel the need to fill every moment with conversation. As he discovers his need for her his protective instincts kick in and ends uncomfortable encounters with Oliver’s guardian and Winifred, I cheered! The danger he inadvertently puts Winifred in is the catalyst to him taking the step to have her in his life forever. 

Ms DeHart always brings a richness to her characters, she uses humor and fast paced conversations to keep you interested and wanting more. The grace with which Ms DeHart handles both Alistair’s and Oliver’s quiet ways is brilliant. I am excited to see what happens with the other members of the Seven.

For Lady Katherine Langdon, widowed Viscountess Crosby, danger comes in two forms- Lucien Marvaine, Earl of Roxberry, who was the spare, and attempts on her life. The first is understandable; he’s handsome, has known her since her christening, they are friends and she finds herself attracted to him. The attraction is a bit disconcerting as she does not want to lose their friendship. A relationship that has become strained for reasons she is not sure of. The second form of danger has both her and Lucien at a loss.

When they meet again, Lucien is the Earl and Katherine is widowed. He sets about making her his as he should have done four years ago. He discovers the bright, confident woman he loves has been replaced with one that is timid, lacking self-confidence and wishes to blend into the background. 

The pace of the story fast and the conversations are lively and the characters are brilliant. The twists and turns are beautifully orchestrated to keep you on your toes. Watching Katherine re-emerge and become the “bold and brazen” woman she once was is fabulous. The delightful characters of Lucien’s sister and grandmother and Katherine’s friend, Louise are elegantly written and help to keep Lucien on his toes. The villain is artfully hidden until the climax of the book- brilliant. I always enjoy Ms. Barnes’ work and this is no exception, well done.

The Honorable Richard John Craven, handsome, white knight to damsels in distress and rake is watching his life turn upside down. He is not sure what true love is and if he is capable of the feeling.

Madeline Knight, sister of Viscount Strathmore, is strong, loving, compassionate, loyal and lonely. She has only known life in the country and the censure of society as the daughter of a supposed traitor to the crown. Regarding marriage, she knows she wants a man to love that loves her totally and completely and wishes that man is Richard.

Richard and Madeline have a wonderfully unique relationship- they are friends and have been corresponding for six years. Because of a shallow manipulation they find themselves married, both bringing their insecurities with them. Their road to love is filled with murder investigations, ex-lover manipulations, fire, lies and betrayal, danger, abductions and a flaming passion neither of them knew their friendship help. 

With her usual style, humor and brilliant characters we are on a wonderful journey of emotional discovery where the heroine must convince our hero he is worthy of her love. We see the white knight rescued by her strong love. Ms. Evans brings the hero’s into the open with grace and leaves you cheering as he comes to believe in himself and his capacity to really love another. Throughout the story Madeline is steadfast in her love of Richard, but her youth and secluded upbringing add a vulnerability to the journey. The characters that support Richard and Madeline love are charming and in-depth and add layers of emotion I enjoyed.

The subplot that pulls the story together has excellent villains. The shallow, spoiled and spitefulness of these characters keep you turning the pages to see evil overturned by good and love.

I am a fan of Ms. Evans’ writing and was not disappointed. I recommend this and her other stories wholeheartedly. I missed the book before this in the series, but will be going back to read it. Once again, well done, Ms. Evans.

Overall this was a good book- the size was a bit daunting. You open the book in your Kindle and it tells you in 13 hours 47 minutes you will be done. The rational side of my minds says, “There are seven novellas here; that is about two hours per story.” The reader side says, “One book 13+ hours.” I did enjoy the read, some stories setup the coming series very nicely, while others seemed more stand alone and I am looking forward to seeing how they go.

A Highlander’s Heart (The Highland Knights, Book 1) by Jennifer Haymore  4.5 Stars

This story was delightful and in the end you know who the series players are. Claire has always been a bit of a hoyden. She travels to the Continent to find her husband, Rob, during Wellington’s campaign. Rob and Claire’s HEA comes after a shared great tragedy, having to set aside pride and a willingness to put their hearts on the line again. Although this is a novella, typical of other stories by Ms. Haymore, she uses her humor, deep characters and detailed relationships, and pulls in profound emotions to tell the story and bring it to life. I am anxiously awaiting the “rest of the story.”  What adventures does Ms. Haymore have in store for these Highlander’s?

The Widow Vanishes (Prequel to the Heart of Enquiry Series) by Grace Callaway  3.5 Stars

Annabel is forced by circumstances not of her making to take a position no woman would willingly take to pay off debts. She meets William and decides she is not cut out for the job and runs away. William is charged with the task of finding her for a horrible man of “business.” The road to their HEA is rocky and each of them puts the other’s wellbeing ahead of their own. This was my first introduction to Ms Callaway and I was not prepared for the level of sex in such a short amount of time. The depth of the characters was wonderful I was immediately cheering for both of them. We are introduced to the coming series after the HEA and it sounds intriguing.  

Scandal Before Sunrise (The Weekly Scandal, Book 1) by Sabrina Darby  3.5 Stars 

Elliot Jones is a second son that is shallow, spoiled and in need of an occupation besides gossip. Then he discovers Abby, who his entire group of friends seems to know, and his world is thrown for a loop. She is not the girl those friends remember and she is looking for a match. The play between them is fun and you see Elliot redeem himself and step up and prove to have integrity. I am not totally sure at the end which of the other characters will be coming up in the rest of the series, but I have a couple I am hoping for. We shall see.

Liberty was bored.  The daughter of the third son of Viscount Levy and a Boston heiress, Liberty had grown up in America.  When her father chose to return to England to take his place in the aristocracy of London, her mother quickly found her place in the charitable and scholarly circles of society.  Liberty, however, felt stifled by the rules of society that governed her new life.

“I’d love to do something more interesting than buying ribbons to match my bonnets,” she complained to her mother.  Even riding had lost its allure as she was expected to ride leisurely in Hyde Park, instead of taking off for a thrilling ride in the country.

A series of advertisements in the Morning Post were suddenly the talk of the town.  A young lady had met the man of her dreams, but she did not know his name or where to find him.Her attempts to meet with him again through the advertisements were unsuccessful, but a sympathetic Liberty suddenly found in them a project to keep her busy.  She would find the unhappy young lady and work to reunite her with her mysterious “man in blue.”Little did she know that her “project” would bring with it romantic possibilities of her own.

Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, the fourth book in the Half Moon House series by Deb Marlowe, is a delightful story of the escapades of Liberty as she tries to help her new friend Felicity find her young man in blue.  Surprisingly, after finding the young man, Peter, and reuniting him with Felicity, Liberty finds herself attracted to Peter’s uncle, the Viscount Brodham, who seems determined to keep Felicity and Peter apart.  Can Liberty justify her own growing feelings for the Viscount when his motives and actions are in direct competition with hers?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I found myself wishing it were a full novel instead of a novella.  I loved the spirited character of Liberty and I felt I knew her well, but I didn’t feel that the other characters, especially Viscount Brodham, were as fully developed as they could have been had the book been longer.  I would still recommend this book to readers, however, especially those who want a fun little book that can be read in one sitting.

In With this Ring, the third novel in the Wicked Worthington Series by Celeste Bradley, we finds the family down on their luck after the loss of the family estate to a fire. Nineteen year old Elektra Worthington, the middle daughter, feels that it is her responsibility to return the family to social and economic prominence by marrying into money.

In preparation for her coming out season in London Society, Elektra has used her considerable manipulative talents to secure invitations to all of the finest events and acquire an appropriate wardrobe.  All that’s left is to choose an appropriate target.

“Here’s a juicy tidbit from your very own Voice of Society,” began the gossip column in the local daily news.  “Now returning triumphantly from a wealth- building sojourn in the Bahamas, Lord Aaron Arbogast, who will soon assume the title of the Earl of Arbodean, has a secret motive – he has, in fact, come home to find himself a proper English countess!”

Lord Aaron Arbogast.  She wrote his name on her list of possible conquests, underlining it, not once, but twice.  In the delightful comedy of errors that follows, the unsuspecting Lord Aaron, who has secrets of his own, finds himself the victim of Elektra’s schemes to get his attention.  In an act of desperation, she even kidnaps him.  

It is very easy to like Elektra and Lord Aaron as the author sends them through a story filled with several humorous twists and turns.  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a quick, quirky escape, and while having read the first two Worthington books would definitely be a plus, you can certainly enjoy With this Ring as a stand-alone delight.

Campbell “Cam” Sinclair is the family and clan’s heir, but because of his past he no longer takes that duty, or anything else, seriously. He has been offering his sword as a mercenary because of his feelings of guilt. He is smart, has a sense of humor and a deep sense of chivalry, loyalty and integrity.

They meet when Joan is being attacked. She is traveling dressed as a young man and Cam comes to her aid. In the process of rescuing her Cam is injured. As a healer, and the reason Cam is injured, Joan rescues him back and nurses him through a fever and he offers to take her safely to her destination. Cam discovers she is not a he and is intrigued about the reason for her disguise. The time they spend slowly traveling together is one of discovery, long talks, laughter, and attraction.  The completion of her quest finds her in greatly improved circumstances and married to Cam. Her new circumstances create issues that require the gentleness and care that cam brings to the story.

Ms Sands writes deep, rich characters and keeps the pace moving so you do not realize you have stayed up all night reading. Her sense of humor is charming. She has created a journey from attraction, to love and the embracing of a HEA that is well done.

Clayton Galbraith, the Duke of Penthurst, has slowly gained back the friendship of his three comrades, who initially held him to blame for the death of their friend, Baron Lakewood, in a duel years ago.  As more facts become known to all of them, it seems that while Penthurst intended to fire wide, Lakewood intentionally  walked into the bullet.  There are things Lakewood was involved in that made him prefer death to discovery.

One person who hasn’t forgiven Penthurst, though, is Lydia Alfreton.   Lakewood was the object of her first love, though no one else knew this, including her brother, who was one of his friends.  Before their relationship progressed any further than a kiss, he was killed.  Lydia became a shadow of herself, known for her vacant stare and lifelessness.  She only appears to come alive now when she is gambling, and she gambles a lot.

Lydia is also being blackmailed.  Penthurst happens upon Lydia struggling with her blackmaileras he is attempting to abduct her. He rescues her, but in a very public forum, which will cause a huge scandal if they don’t marry.  So, a quick marriage takes place, a marriage that neither wanted.  Although there is no immediate love between Lydia and Penthurst, there is a strong attraction, and the physical side of their marriage is strong.

Penthurst is protective and honorable and easy to like.  Lydia, on the other hand, took some time for me to warm up to.  There was a coldness, even a cruelty about her at times.  But as I began to imagine the story from her point of view, I became more sympathetic as to why she acted the way she did.  Also, Madeline Hunter did an excellent job of letting us see Lydia come to realize the the truth about her first love and herself a little at a time.  We get to see her become stronger and better, and ready for the real love of her life. This is a satisfying end to the Fairbourne Quartet series, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Augustus Malvern, Lord Eastleigh, has come home from the war missing a large part of himself. He no longer enjoys being in London and the whirl that goes with it. He now enjoys the relative quiet of the country, spending time with his family. He has a large, loving and boisterous family. He is handsome and has a charming chipped front tooth that he worries when he is feeling stress. 

“Sarah Marks” is very quiet, afraid of men and being touched, and does not know who she is. Her past is missing, but the tidbits she does remember are about horticulture and the curative properties of honey.

Amnesia is something they have in common; hers from a bump on the head and his from the war. He knows her past and is treading lightly to try to help her remember on her own. They have an attraction that grows as they get to know each other. He is battling megrims, brought on by stress that put him in bed for days. He takes her to his home where his grandmother, a very eccentric vivacious woman will be their chaperone. The tenderness and care he shows her is foreign to her. Once she remembers a large part of her life she goes home to her parents. There the rest of her memory returns. The revelation that she is married and who she is married to brought a good gasp and smile. The balance of the story, omitting spoilers, is remarkable. She learns trust, love and what family is. His family members bring charm, humor, loyalty and spirit to the story. I enjoyed the pace and the conversations. I have discovered a new author to watch.
