 ABOUT DREW + FABLE FOREVER:

 Monica Murphy returns with her most beloved characters, Drew and Fable, in this eBook original short story that brings her bestselling New Adult series full circle. Fantasy. How I ended up with NFL player Drew Callahan, the guy every woman wants, is beyond my wildest dreams. All I know is that once he chose me as his one and only, I sure wasn’t looking back. I had past wounds and he showed patience and concern—even accepting responsibility for my messed-up kid brother. Now, yet again, he's found a way to blow my mind: an exotic wedding and honeymoon miles and miles away from home. What else could a girl ever ask for? Reality. Except now the honeymoon’s over. Drew's football schedule takes him on the road constantly, while I need to stay put and look after my brother until he finishes high school—because God knows our sorry excuse for a mother won’t. I know Drew loves me with all his heart, and I’ll always be over the moon about him. This just isn’t how I imagined life as newlyweds . . . dealing with the distance, missing him constantly. But we’ve gone through hard times before. We can get through this, too, right? We’re Drew and Fable, together forever. At least I hope so. . . .

EXCERPT:
 “We should check out Ocean Avenue tomorrow,” Drew whispers close to my ear, amusement tingeing his deep voice.

“What? Are you serious?” Even though I’ve come to terms with being here, it doesn’t mean I want to linger and make it a serious vacation. Besides, Drew needs to get back home so he can resume practice.

“Well yeah, remember the spot where we kissed?” His eyes are warm as they search my face, filled with so much love I feel my heart swell.

“Yes,” I whisper achingly. “Of course I remember.”

“I want to go back there.” He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear, his index finger lingering on my skin. “I want to kiss you again in that little alley and remember how wet we were from the rain. How nervous I was. I was scared you might reject me.”

I’d felt the same way. We’d dealt with much of the same feelings and fears and hadn’t even known it.

“I want to take you to that store where you got the dress that just about killed me and buy you whatever you want,” he continues, his fingers drifting across my jaw. My eyes flutter closed as memories rush back at me. “I want to sit outside the dressing room and have you come out to show me every single thing you’re trying on.”

That he remembers all the little details sends a thrill of pleasure spiraling to the very depths of my soul.

“And then I want to wander off for a bit and let you do whatever you want, secretly hoping that you’ll send me a text that says marshmallow. Though if you don’t that’s okay because I’ll send you one instead.” He offers up a crooked smile and the sight of it cracks my heart wide open, overflowing with so much pure love for him I want to cry. “Because we made a deal. Whenever we see or hear that word, the other comes running. I’ll always be the one to rescue you, Fable. You never have to worry about that.”

His Wicked Heart

     Jasper looked at Olivia. “How do you want me?”
    Her eyes widened slightly. He hadn’t intended an innuendo, but that’s clearly how she’d taken it. And he couldn’t keep his own blood from heating in response.
    Olivia glanced away. “You should remove your coat.”
   “And your waistcoat, I should think. Maybe even your shirt,” Louisa mused. Olivia shot her a worried glance. “It’s quite all right, dear. We shan’t tell anyone you’ve seen Jasper bare-chested.”
    Jasper almost barked with laughter. She’d seen that and more.
   Olivia’s hands quivered as she fingered the measuring tape. “That won’t be necessary. He won’t be wearing his waistcoat without a shirt, after all.” She shot him a furtive glance and Jasper wondered if she hadn’t envisioned him that way. His body tightened. This was dangerous ground.
    He shrugged out of his coat and laid it over the back of a chair, just as he’d done at her apartment when she’d seduced him. Don’t think of that. Quickly, he stripped off his waistcoat and deposited it atop the coat.
    Louisa perched on the settee, while Olivia came toward him. “Raise your arms, please. Straight out, yes.” She stood before him and measured him from shoulder to waist.
    At the first touch of her hand, he sucked in a breath. God, this wouldn’t do. He was already hardening. He turned slightly, presenting his back more fully to Louisa.
    Olivia looked up at him. “Please stand still.”
   “I thought you could use the light from the windows.” He stared straight ahead and tried to think about the apples ripening on the tree outside.
    She stretched the tape across his upper chest, from shoulder to shoulder. With just the lawn of his shirt separating her ministrations from his flesh, he felt each touch with devastating accuracy. His body heated to a nearly unbearable degree. He focused on the damn apples and keeping his arms out. God, she smelled like lavender and honey, so sweet and delicious. Think of the apples—also sweet and delicious. God damn it.
    His aunt’s voice interrupted the battle in his head. “We’re quite looking forward to the Faversham Ball, Jasper. You’ll dance with Olivia, of course.”
   “Of course.” His voice had deepened with desire. Olivia stopped measuring and froze, her gaze fixed below his waistband.
    She looked up at him again and the charged look they shared was nearly his undoing. He tore his gaze from hers and damned every single apple on that tree to hell.
    She moved behind him and measured from his neck to the base of his spine. The torture was no better there. Then she wrapped the tape around the circumference of his chest and he closed his eyes in sweet agony. If she didn’t finish soon he’d make a complete fool of himself.
    She lowered the tape to his waist and it slipped. She had to reach around to slide it back into place, and her hands came dangerously close to his erection. He couldn’t keep his hips from twitching in response.
    “Done!” She snapped the tape in her haste to move away from him.

What’s your favorite Thanksgiving Day food? If you’re not American or Canadian, what is your favorite holiday food?

My favorite Thanksgiving food is definitely the turkey. But that is not complete without stuffing and a lot of gravy. Of course, a delicious pie wouldn't hurt, but someone will need to make it! Lazy and incompetent chefs in my household. LOL :)

Throwback Thursday: Historical Romance Edition (#9)

Happy Thursday, everyone! And welcome to a new feature on Buried Under Romance and Love Saves the World.

What is Throwback Thursday?
Traditionally, Throwback Thursday celebrates nostalgia, asking participants to post a personal photo or an image from their past -- usually from 5 to 10 years ago. There are a lot of book blogs that also do a book-related Throwback Thursday.

The Historical Romance Edition:
Since Tin of Love Saves the World and I are unapologetic lovers of historical romances, we've decided to focus on our beloved genre.

Here are our rules:
1. It must be posted on a Thursday.
2. It must be a historical romance novel published before October 3, 2008.

So, the novel I'm featuring is...

                                                    Rules-of-Engagement Christina Dodd

Blurb:
The Rules of Engagement:
Choose a bride from this year’s debutantes.
Decide on a proper settlement.
Send an announcement to The Times.
Inform the bride of her good fortune.

Rules of Respectability
Devon Mathewes, Earl of Kerrich and London’s most celebrated rake, finds his income and family name imperiled by his notorious reputation. So he demands three things. A sensible, unattractive governess who will not wish to visit his bed—after all, a handsome man such as himself can’t be bothered to make love to every woman who wants him. An orphan he can adopt and seem to care for—his apparent kindness will cover him with the patina of respectability. And that his life not be altered unduly—the child and the governess could better his character without his participation.

Rules of Passion
As a condition of accepting the governess position, Miss Pamela Lockhart has a few rules of her own. Devon at all times must behave with propriety. She must be allowed to choose a suitable orphan. Most important, Devon must vow to never ever delve into Pamela’s background or her appearance, lest he discover the deepest secrets of her heart. But of course, all rules are made to be broken…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is my first Christina Dodd book, and one that made me fall in love with her writing. This book is utterly hilarious -- from Kerrich's uh...mishap that is still being talked about despite it having happened years ago to Pamela's struggle in masquerading as an old woman just to get the money from this position...everything is funny and sweet. And when Kerrich suddenly realizes that he is attracted to an old woman, that's just priceless! But amongst that, there are also sweet and tender moments as the two become closer together and forge a friendship that leads to love. And of course, the orphan who Kerrich had originally set out to buy turned out to unexpectedly charm him...so all is good and happy. :)
Now, head over to Tin @ Love Saves the World for her pick of the week.  Ki Pha @ Doing Some Reading has also joined us, so be sure to visit her blog as well. :-)
Waiting on Wednesday (#7): The Baron Next Door by Erin Knightley + Chase's Story! (for fans of Sarah MacLean)
"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week an upcoming book I can’t wait to read is…
The Baron Next Door: A Prelude to a Kiss Novel
The Baron Next Door by Erin Knightley
Publisher: Penguin Group
Publication date: June3, 2014
Series: A Prelude to a Kiss #1
Amazon Pre-Order | Barnes & Noble
Charity Effington learned two valuable lessons from her first betrothal:
1) When one loses the attention of an earl, one gains the attention of every gossip in London.
2) Despite the lingering scandal, she’s not prepared to marry for anything less than love.
After an exhausting Season, Bath’s first annual music festival offers Charity the perfect escape. Between her newly formed trio and her music-loving grandmother, Charity is free to play the pianoforte to her heart’s content. That is, until their insufferably rude, though undeniably handsome, neighbor tells her to keep the “infernal racket” to a minimum.
Hugh Danby, Baron Cadgwith, may think he’s put an end to the noise, but he has no idea what he’s begun. Though the waters of Bath provide relief from the suffering of his war injuries, he finds his new neighbor bothersome, vexing, and…inexplicably enchanting. Before long, Hugh suspects that even if his body heals, it’s his heart that might end up broken.
I'm a big fan of Erin Knightley's writing. Her latest book, Flirting With Fortune, earned 5 stars from me (review here) and after reading a teaser first chapter of this book, I'm completely hooked. This will be a battle of wills story and the hero, like it or not, is going to love music by the end of summer. :D
The second book I'm looking forward to is...Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover by Sarah MacLean. This will be released on August 15th, 2014. For those who have read Temple's book in the newly released No Good Duke Goes Unpunished (for which I have written a 5 star review here), you'll know who the mysterious Chase is. Now...I'm just waiting for that cover to come to totally make my day.
Happy the day before Thanksgiving to folks in the U.S.! What books are you waiting for?
In Your Arms by Merry Farmer
About In Your Arms
In Your Arms Merry Farmer
Lily Singer has never belonged. Taken from her tribe as a child and raised in a white man’s school, she no longer has a place in either world. Teaching has become her life. When that life is threatened by rumors and prejudice after a string of robberies, she must turn for help to the one man who spells disaster for her carefully ordered existence. Will he save her or steal her heart?
Christian Avery, Justice of the Peace, is used to having things his way. Cold Springs is his responsibility, and when its citizens blame the local Indian population for the mysterious robberies, it’s up to him to restore order and maintain calm. The one person who refuses to follow his lead is the beautiful, native-born Lily. Her defiance turns his life upside down.
But when town gossip shifts from robberies to romance after a foolish indiscretion, Lily’s job and reputation are on the line. She must choose between the only life she has ever known and the only place she has ever felt at home, in Christian’s arms.
Review:
In a book that intelligently tackles racial tensions of post-Civil War era, Merry Farmer has penned a highly engaging romance between two fiery-spirited individuals who, in spite of their temperament and position, came to need each other in their lives.
Living in Montana, still a relatively rugged land in the late 1800s, Lily Singer was that odd ball of a person. Taken from her bride at a young age, her upbringing at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School ensured that she would be brought up as a white person. But she is also Singing Bird to the Indians, whose culture she tries at first to reject, as it would allow her an easier life as a schoolteacher. For Lily though, she has always been a lost soul, at once belonging to either ethnicity yet separate from both. Her sole comfort in life is to teach, but when prejudice among the town's influential wants to ban Indian children from going to school, claiming they were savages, Lily's indignation caused her to rise up to the challenge and wager that the Indian children are just as smart as white children. However, distraction is abound as Lily has to not only coach her team of ethnically mixed students to win at the Academic Games, clear the names of innocent Indians who had been accused theft and robber, and avoid succumbing to the seduction of handsome Christian Avery, whose very job puts her reputation at risk.
Christian Avery fell first in lust, then in love, with Lily. A member of the prestigious Baltimore Averys, he came out to the wilds of Montana on his own to be a lawman. His responsibility is vast, duties immense, which just means he has no time to be distracted by a schoolteacher who's bent on challenging his law. The problem? He likes her a bit more each time he sees her. To him, Lily is his spirited virago whose sense of equality and justice matches his own; to some of the other townspeople, Lily is an Indian who is not fit to be a teacher. Even as he tries to hunt down the real miscreants that are stirring up the town, his true obstacle was in convincing Lily the truth of his affections, and to take a chance with him. In a way, this book can be alternatively titled Christian's Seduction, and it takes Lily a long time to succumb.
The relationship between Lily and Christian is truly a battle of wills. Both are fierce, stubborn, and firm on their own beliefs. From the outset, the two were antagonistic. But as they spend more time together, both realize that the other's views are simply their own but from a different perspective. The grudging friendship between them was slow and realistic, eventually building up to passionate love. Together, they sizzled, but apart, they were each very unique. Undoubtedly Lily is the more complex of the two, given her search for cultural identity throughout the book, as well as someone with whom to claim kin. The image of Christian as an unyielding, firm presence is the perfect counterpart for Lily's emotional instability, and he wears the shining armor quite well. Amongst all these, however, the winning point of this book is not its fantastic characters but the abundance of historical details within the story; from the tensions between whites and Indians of the late 1800s, when just some years year white settlers were disputing with Indians over much of the western frontier, to the strict social mores of the Victorian era, it is obvious that Merry Farmer had done her research in writing this book. As a history lover, I highly recommend this book to all fans of historical romance, to learn a bit of the Wild West without the outlaws but with contemporary issues and captivating characters.
*Review copy received from the author in exchange for an honest review; "Indian" here is used to mean "Native American/American Indian"
In this thrilling introduction to her Renegade Royals series, Vanessa Kelly transports readers to the court of King George III—where a London street urchin unwittingly plays Cupid, ushering in a new era—and ultimately a new kind of royal…
With her widowed mother working long hours as governess to the royal children, Linnet St. Clare must look after her siblings and run the household. Now she must add to her worries the fate of Dominic, a poor orphan who has inspired the wrath of the king himself. Sir Anthony Tait is at a loss for how to capture Linnet’s interest. If only she would be still long enough for courting. Outright seduction seems the only answer. But will his kisses be enough to persuade her—or might Anthony have something to learn from young Dominic about matters of the heart? And in saving the boy’s future, might Anthony and Linnet at last create their own?…
Excerpt:
London, 1786
The door to Sir Anthony Tait’s study flew open and in marched the most tempting bundle of outraged femininity he’d ever set eyes on. She marched across the floor, her tread so firm it left marks in the thick Axminster carpet.
That Linnet St. Clare was annoyed was no surprise. Anthony seemed to aggravate her on a regular basis and she made no bones about showing her displeasure—when she wasn’t avoiding him, that is. She wasn’t avoiding him today, which he found intriguing.
Linnet had an interesting escort too, a unique departure from the type of chaperone who normally accompanied a gently bred, unmarried woman to a bachelor household. The Linnet he knew rarely strayed from the boundaries of propriety, as careful in observing both the form and function of proper decorum as any member of the Court of St. James. That she’d thrown it to the winds meant she was in trouble. Whatever it was it must be bad, because she rarely asked for help, and especially not from him.
Anthony glanced at Linnet’s young companion, assuming he was the source of the problem. The tall, lanky boy trailing in her wake looked furious, but also cowed into reluctant submission by the woman he topped by nearly a foot. That was amusingly predictable, since Linnet managed to intimidate most of the men who blundered into her line of fire. Deceptively petite, sweetly plump, and with the face of an angel, she’d fooled many an unwary man into thinking she had the personality of a celestial being, as well.
How wrong they were.
But where some saw a managing female, Anthony saw a woman determined to make the world a better place, especially for those she loved. Her need to manage everyone who fell into her orbit had frightened off more than one suitor attracted to her pretty face and lush figure. Observation had convinced Anthony that Linnet didn’t mind that in the least, preferring to remain a spinster. In fact, he often thought she showed her claws for exactly that reason—to preserve her unmarried state, despite the gentle pleadings of her widowed mamma that she start looking about for a husband.
Anthony had every intention of turning those wishes into reality, regardless of the daughter’s objections.
Followed by the boy, Linnet came to a halt in front of his desk, glaring at Anthony as he rose to his feet. Bringing up the rear was Anthony’s butler, obviously out of breath from rushing up the stairs after the unannounced intruders.
“Sir Anthony,” Carter wheezed, his portly figure bent almost double, “I informed Miss St. Clare that you weren’t receiving today—” But Carter fell silent when Linnet flashed him the look.
Anthony pressed his lips together to hold back a laugh. There were few things he enjoyed more than watching Linnet with the bit between her teeth.
     Thank you, Mary, for letting me come out and play on your lovely new blog!  Your questions were just fabulous. And, in turn, I have a question for you and your readers at the end of the interview.  I can’t wait to hear your answers!
1.    What made you want to write romance? And more specifically, romance set in the Victorian era?
      It’s not that I “want” to write romance; it’s that I just write romance. It’s the natural bend of my mind. I guess I must refer to Stephen King’s oft repeated quote when asked why he chooses to write what he does, “What makes you think I have any choice?”
I’ve always been fascinated by the Victorian Era.  Queen Victoria reigned for so long and during a time of great social change. The society was highly stratified and, at times, repressive, giving me a great deal of comic leverage.
     I had completed a Regency before Wicked Little Secrets, and I adore that era. Many Regency writers live and breathe Jane Austen.  As much as I truly adore Austen, I’ve been more influenced by Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde. I just drink Dickens’ work. His characters and setting are brilliant and vivid.  He has such sensory detail in his work that I feel transported one hundred and sixty years back in time when I read him. I did a great deal of research on his character Jaggers in Great Expectations when creating the solicitor Robert Teakesbury in Wicked Little Secrets.
   Also, I spent much of my young life volunteering at the local theater,  where I was exposed to such great comic farces as Arsenic and Old Lace, Charley’s Aunt, Strange Bedfellows, and, of course, The Importance of Being Ernest.  I adore that play.  I can read from any point in the script and just laugh aloud.
2.      As your first book with Sourcebooks – Wicked Little Secrets – is coming out next week, please give some inside information on the book. For instance, how did you come up with the plot and characters?
    They grew organically out of the story. I had recently stopped working on a Regency after I had complicated the plot until it was a hopeless mess. My other Regency, Rakes and Radishes, I had decided to shelf (It was later ePublished.)  I really wasn’t writing anything for a stretch. Then one day, I typed out a single paragraph about a rigid Methodist biddy who was conducting a Bible study in her parlor. I sent the single paragraph to one of my dearest friends, the brilliant writer Catherine Scott/Catriona Iams. She loved it. The entire story was born of that paragraph.
3.      What research did you have to do for your book?
    Every page in the book has a least one or more detail that needed to be researched.  I typically do enough research to get myself in trouble when I write the initial drafts. Once I have the general plot and scenes tacked down, I research the specific details. Sometimes, I get in trouble using this method and have to do a little tap dance to get myself out of a nasty historical faux pas. For instance, Wicked Little Secrets was initially set in the late 1830s and included a plain-clothed detective. I moved the year up when I found an obscure history website that stated the first plain-clothed investigators appeared in 1845. Later, I revised out my plain-clothed policeman but the year remained.
   I think the most enjoyable research for the book was actually touring John Wesley’s chapel in London. The Methodist chapel in Wicked Little Secrets borrows some details from John Wesley’s. http://www.wesleyschapel.org.uk/vchapel.htm
4.    When you set out to write Wicked Little Secrets did you have in mind a certain tone (i.e. dark and gritty or light-hearted) for the book?
    I wanted laughter and naughtiness.  I also desired to experiment with a strong plot-driven story. Several of my friends are mystery writers, and I wanted to dabble with a mystery plot in a romance.
5.   Do you have a current work-in-progress? When can we expect your next work?
   I get nervous talking about my current work-in-progress. I’m rather superstitious about revealing what I’m working on. I prefer to remain silent.
So, I have a question for your wonderful readers. If you could live in any historical novel, what would it be and why?  I’ll start.  I would live in A Room With A View.  I would love to tour Italy, sharing delicious meals with the fascinating George Emerson and his father.  They would tell me profound and soul stirring things just like in the book.
Thankfully Naughty Giveaway Hop!
**Note: This post is 18+ content**
Welcome to Buried Under Romance here to celebrate the season to be naughty!
I adore the winter season (albeit how cold it gets) for all the joy to be found in the Thanksgiving holidays, Christmas, and New Years. This is my first ever giveaway hop, and it is to celebrate my blog's two-month birthday as well as all the deliciousness to be found in erotica.
Admittedly erotica is not a genre I frequently read, but I enjoy the genre and that by itself is a secret side of my life -- closet reader. ^_^
Now then, what sort of naughty stuff do you want during this season? Is it a secret wish to be with a loved one? Or perhaps simply planning a family dinner that's bound to get interesting? I'd love to hear what you have planned, your favorite erotic novel, anything really! Do leave a comment with your email and one lucky winner will receive an e-copy of one of my favorite historical eroticas, Jess Michaels's Pleasing the Lady.
Other than that, fill out the Rafflecopter and I will choose TWO winners who will each receive an e-copy of an erotic novel of her choosing.
