Guest Post: The Affairs of Lady Jane Fielding by Viveka Portman (Giveaway)

About the Book:

In the world of Regency England, only one thing matters — the begetting of an heir…

There is one fact I cannot hide nor deny. I have borne my husband no sons…

When Lord Jacob Fielding suffers a traumatic injury denying him more children, it devastates both his present and his future. He and his wife Jane have only daughters, and the brother in line to inherit his title and lands is a disgusting reprobate, a man who should never have power over anyone.

In desperation, Lord Fielding formulates a wicked plan. He invites his distant cousin Matthew to come and share their home…and possibly more. Jane is shocked, but cannot deny her curiosity. She loves her husband, and their situation is desperate, and Matthew is a kind, gentle, attractive man. But what can this situation bring, but tension and jealousy?

Emotions and libidos run high as the Fielding men search for a way to satisfy the need for an heir, their own lusts, and, most importantly, the desires of Lady Jane, before time runs out.

I don’t know about you, but I am not a fan of frank and graphic language in my romance novels. Does that sound prudish? Maybe, but let me assure you, I’m an erotic romance writer, so prudish isn’t a label that sticks well with me.

Of course, those naughty four letters words can be used for emphasis and to make a point, but honestly, if I don’t use those words with frequency in my own daily life, I don’t really want to read a character using them either – at least without good reason.

This is one of the reasons I gravitated towards historical erotic romance. I’m not saying you won’t hear Regency era character expressing a desire for a ‘f**k’ or the dreaded ‘c’ word to describe female genitals, but on the whole, a decent historical hero tends to steer away from the words considered vulgar.

So as a historical erotic romance author, how do I describe intimate sex acts without the use of frank and graphic language? Well, allow me to introduce you to the beauty of euphemisms and cant language. Euphemisms are inoffensive words or phrases that are substituted for words that are considered offensive. There are probably hundreds of websites that list synonyms, euphemisms and cant words and phrases (a cant vocabulary is simply one that is specialised to a subject type and era). But, my favourite resource for this kind of vocabulary is Stephen Hart’s 2013 book ‘Cant - A Gentleman's Guide to the Language of Rogues in Georgian London,’ which is essentially a ‘time traveller’s guide’ to the vocabulary of Georgian England. A few of my favourite cant words are instrument, hair splitter, and sugar stick. I’m sure you can figure out what I’m referring to.

Some of the words, however, are very much as rude and vulgar as our own four letter words - whilst others are too comical to use. For example, Miss Brown, Dumb Glutton and mother of all Saints, are words that describe female genitalia that even I’d strive to find an adequate use for. Still there are many cant terms that you’ll easily recognise, quim, muff, man trap, staff, and rod  just to mention a few!

Suffice to say, I’ve had a lot of fun researching words to use in my historical erotic romances. I am a total and utter word-nerd and hope that in some small way even though you’re reading an erotic book, long forgotten words and vocabulary can live on, if not in our own language then at least in our imaginations.

Thank you very much for having me here today.
