Blurb: As a solicitor seeking justice for victims of violence, Tobias Lynsted must maintain control at all times while working in the seedy underworld of London’s East End. The darkness of his world creates a need for the intimacy and release he can only find in the forbidden pleasure of submission. The kind of pleasure where a powerful man has the freedom to let go of his control for a few sweet moments of oblivion. But when a blackmail scheme forces him to marry, the last thing he expects in a wife is a woman who will satisfy the darker side of his nature.
Lady Jane Grisham has no desire to marry, but choosing marriage over a life of destitution is an easy choice to make. Although Jane knows love is for the foolish, Tobias awakens her most wicked and darkest of desires. In the sinful world of domination and submission, Jane uses her blossoming skills to make Tobias surrender not only his body but his secrets. But she quickly discovers that the true test of her strength is trusting Tobias with her heart.
This is the first historical erotica I've read with medium BDSM elements, and it was rather nicely done. Tobias Lynsted had a dark past, and his work is more like that of a Bow Street Runner than a mere solicitor for the Earl of Culverstone. When the Earl blackmails him into mailing his daughter, Jane, Tobias has no choice but to capitulate else his activities at La Maison des Plaisirs Noir (House of Dark Pleasures) an exclusive club catering to men's wildest desires (usually along the lines of submission-domination, erotic play, et cetera). Neither he nor Jane wants this marriage, yet Tobias's concern that Jane will not understand his dark cravings is about to be proven unnecessary...
Lady Jane Grisham may be an earl's daughter, but she's no innocent in mind or body. Her curiosity has led her to befriend Angelique, the madam of La Maison des Plaisirs Noir, and with the skills she's learned there, she has begun leading Tobias on a merry chase to his submission, as the masked Lady Mystere. Ultimately, will he succumb to her commands? In their battle of wills, will they find something everlasting, and perhaps have a true marriage?
Monica Burns has started her Self-Made Man series with a very interesting hero who is afraid to submit in mind and body. Tobias fears the loss of control accompanying his submission, which could mean death in his line of work. Jane, on the other hand, demands Tobias' submission because it gives her a sense of power, of her own femininity, and also as a way to forget her past surrender to an undeserving man. There is also a mystery in this story as Tobias tries to find the one responsible for leaking details of club members, as that it what landed him in Culverstone's blackmail in the first place.
This is a rather nice historical erotica, and I do recommend fans of the genre to read it, though keep in mind that being an erotica, it necessarily focuses on sexual tension and bedroom scenes (in this case BDSM) in greater part than that of a general romance novel.
