About the book:
No matter how much their mothers wanted Sarah and Arthur to wed, Sarah had loathed him. However, circumstance and her late husband’s father conspire against her, and she is forced to turn to Arthur for help. Perhaps she needs his legal expertise, but she refuses to acknowledge how handsome her oldest foe has become…or her reaction to him.

His childhood nemesis is the last person Arthur Davenport expected to require his services. When a spurious claim against her late husband’s estate brings Sarah Wetherall to his door, he can’t refuse the pretty widow.

Thrown together by fate, will they discover there is a fine line between scorn and passion?

Hi peeps,

First off, thank you to Buried Under Romance for having me. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Cassandra Dean and I write historical romance ranging from sweet to steamy. I also play about in the eras, roaming from Ancient Rome to Victorian to the Old West and beyond. My books take readers on an emotional rollercoaster, from the lowest of lows to the joyous of highs. And, of course, my characters fall into the forever kind of love.

Today, I’m chatting about interesting bits of tid I discovered while writing SILK & SCORN, the second in my Silk Series. SILK & SCORN tells the tale of childhood antagonists, Sarah Wetherall (nee Stanhope) and Arthur Davenport. Arthur has grown to become a solicitor specialising in estate planning and is uniquely positioned to help Sarah with an issue regarding her late husband passing away without a will.

Anyhoo, the interesting bits of tid!

Marylebone Cricket Club
It’s a throwaway line, but I needed something Sarah was super passionate about so Arthur could make an offhand comparison. After some (brief) thought, I decided on cricket as her passion and did a quick search to see what cricket clubs were around during the time of the story. When I saw Marylebone Cricket Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marylebone_Cricket_Club), world-famous home of Lord’s Cricket Ground, I couldn’t resist. Being Australian, I grew up with the rivalry between England and Australia and the annual vying for the Ashes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ashes) so I thought it would be grand to include this very slight nod to my Australianessness.

Inheritance and intestacy
The legal sub-plot of the tale hinges on who is legally entitled to inherit an estate when the person passes away without a will. In the English system, it’s pretty straightforward – the spouse always inherits. It was a simple and elegant solution, though Sarah’s former father-in-law is determined to muddy the waters…

Research? Pfft. Totally don’t need that
Being the second in a series, I didn’t need to do a ton of research as the world was already established. SILK & SCANDAL set up the tone of the series along with its world, so therefore SILK & SCORN could just slide right into place. Of course, there are also problems inherent in a series, in that you have to stick with the groundwork you’ve already laid.

So that’s my bits of tid! I hope you enjoyed them and that you’ll check out SILK & SCORN and the Silk Series.

Setting her jaw, she shook her head. “You don’t understand! Robert’s family has been plaguing me for months. Months! And yet you insist you can disentangle them from my life in ten minutes. How is that possible? How?”

Something niggled at him, something that whispered she might be right, but his anger wouldn’t allow him to pause. “It is possible because it is the law. Your money is safe from them.”

“It’s not about the money.”

He raised a brow. “No?”

She scowled. “Money is necessary. It allows me to eat and keep a roof over my head, but the Wetheralls are attempting to nullify everything Robert and I meant to each other. They are claiming my marriage invalid, as if it never happened. But it did, and no matter what they do or what they say, they cannot change that.”

“So your concern is solely with the memories you possess? And I suppose you married him for this great love you felt, but what is it they say? It’s just as easy to love a rich man as a poor one?”

Such fury entered her expression that if he were not so caught up in his own anger, he would have desisted. “That isn’t why I married him.”

“Then why did you marry him?”

“So I wouldn’t have to marry you!”

About Cassandra Dean:

Cassandra grew up daydreaming, inventing fantastical worlds and marvelous adventures. Once she learned to read (First phrase – To the Beach. True story), she was never without a book, reading of other people’s fantastical worlds and marvelous adventures.

Fairy tales, Famous Fives, fantasies and fancies; horror stories, gumshoe detectives, science fiction; Cassandra read it all. Then she discovered Romance and a true passion was born.

So, once upon a time, after making a slight detour into the world of finance, Cassandra tried her hand at writing. After a brief foray into horror, she couldn’t discount her true passion. She started to write Romance and fell head over heels.

The love affair exists to this very day.

Cassandra lives in Adelaide, South Australia.
